Blackberry Margarita Smash

Blackberry Margarita Smash - recipe card

A vibrant and refreshing cocktail that balances the tartness of fresh lime with the sweet-tart burst of muddled blackberries, all smoothed by the warmth of silver tequila. Served over ice with a salted rim and a float of soda water for a light, bubbly finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries (about 5 oz)
  • 4 oz freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 45 limes)
  • 3 oz simple syrup (see note)
  • 8 oz silver tequila (such as Blanco)
  • 2 cups ice cubes, plus more for serving
  • 1 oz club soda or sparkling water (optional, for topping)
  • Coarse sea salt or kosher salt for rimming glasses
  • Lime wedges for garnish

Instructions

  1. If you don’t have simple syrup, make it now: Combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring, until sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. You’ll need 3 oz for this recipe; store any extra in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
  2. Prepare the rim of four rocks glasses: Rub a lime wedge along the rim of each glass. Invert the glass into a shallow dish of coarse salt, pressing gently to adhere. Set aside.
  3. Add the blackberries and 1 oz of the lime juice to a large cocktail shaker or a sturdy 1-quart jar. Use a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon to gently muddle the berries against the bottom and sides of the shaker until they are broken down and release their juice, about 30 seconds. You should see deep purple juice and broken berry pieces.
  4. Add the remaining 3 oz lime juice, 3 oz simple syrup, and 8 oz silver tequila to the shaker. Fill the shaker with 2 cups of ice cubes. Secure the lid tightly.
  5. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is frosty and very cold to the touch. This ensures proper dilution and chilling.
  6. Fill each prepared glass with fresh ice cubes. Strain the cocktail evenly into the four glasses, dividing the liquid and any small berry bits that pass through the strainer (some pulp is fine).
  7. Top each drink with a splash of club soda (about 1 oz per glass) if desired, for a light effervescence. Stir gently once to combine.
  8. Garnish each glass with a lime wedge and, if you like, a fresh blackberry on a cocktail pick. Serve immediately.

Notes

Storage: This cocktail is best enjoyed fresh; do not store mixed. Leftover simple syrup keeps refrigerated for up to 2 weeks. For a sweeter drink, increase simple syrup to 4 oz total. For a less sweet version, reduce to 2 oz. To make a pitcher: multiply all ingredients by 4, combine in a pitcher, and stir vigorously with ice. Strain into glasses and top with soda. Do not muddle more than 30 seconds or the seeds will impart bitterness. If you prefer no seeds, double-strain through a fine-mesh sieve before serving.
