Burger King French Toast Sticks

Burger King French Toast Sticks - recipe card

Golden, crispy French toast sticks with a cinnamon-sugar coating, just like the drive-thru favorite but made fresh at home. These sticks are soft and custardy on the inside with a satisfying crunch outside, perfect for dipping in maple syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick-cut white bread (such as Texas toast), crusts removed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Slice each bread slice into three equal sticks, about 1 inch wide. Set aside on a wire rack to allow slight drying, about 5 minutes, which helps the custard absorb evenly without making the bread soggy.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until the mixture is smooth and the sugar is dissolved. The custard should be a pale yellow with a uniform color.
  3. In a separate small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Mix well and set aside for coating the cooked sticks.
  4. Place a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and let it melt, swirling the pan to coat the surface. The butter should foam but not brown.
  5. Dip each bread stick into the custard mixture, turning to coat all sides. Let the excess drip off for about 2 seconds—do not soak, as the bread should remain intact.
  6. Place the coated sticks in the hot skillet in a single layer, leaving space between them. Cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp on the outside. The internal temperature of the sticks should reach 165°F / 74°C for egg safety.
  7. Adjust the heat to medium-low if the sticks brown too quickly, and add more butter as needed between batches. The butter should sizzle gently, not smoke.
  8. Using tongs, transfer the cooked sticks to a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Sprinkle generously with the cinnamon-sugar mixture while still hot, so it adheres.
  9. Repeat with remaining bread sticks, adding the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the pan as needed, and ensuring the pan is not overcrowded to maintain crispness.
  10. Serve immediately with maple syrup for dipping. Sticks can also be kept warm in a 200°F / 93°C oven for up to 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Storage: Leftover sticks can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days. To freeze, place the cooked, cooled sticks on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze for 2 hours, then transfer to a ziplock bag; freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat: For best results, reheat frozen or refrigerated sticks in an air fryer at 350°F / 177°C for 5–7 minutes, or in a toaster oven at 350°F / 177°C for 5 minutes. Avoid microwaving as it makes them soggy. If reheating multiple sticks, spread them in a single layer and flip halfway through.
