Chick-fil-A Honey Roasted BBQ Sauce

Chick-fil-A Honey Roasted BBQ Sauce - recipe card

A sweet and smoky sauce that perfectly balances the rich flavor of honey with the tang of tomato and the warmth of smoked paprika. This copycat version is thick, glossy, and clings beautifully to chicken, ribs, or roasted vegetables, delivering that signature Chick-fil-A taste right at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1/4 cup water (to adjust consistency)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients and measure them precisely. This sauce comes together quickly once you start cooking, so having everything ready ensures you don’t overcook or scorch the sugars.
  2. In a medium-sized saucepan (2-3 quart capacity), combine the ketchup, honey, molasses, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Use a whisk to stir everything together until the honey and molasses are fully incorporated into the ketchup, creating a smooth, reddish-brown base.
  3. Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and cayenne pepper (if using). Whisk again to distribute the dry spices evenly throughout the liquid, ensuring no clumps remain.
  4. Place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer—you’ll see small bubbles breaking across the surface, but not a rolling boil. This usually takes about 3-5 minutes. Stir frequently with a heat-resistant spatula or whisk to prevent the sugars from sticking to the bottom and burning.
  5. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low. Allow the sauce to cook gently, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes. During this time, the flavors will meld, and the sauce will thicken slightly as some moisture evaporates. Stir every 2-3 minutes to maintain a consistent texture.
  6. After about 15 minutes, check the consistency. The sauce should coat the back of a spoon, leaving a thin, translucent film when you run your finger through it. If it’s too thick for your liking, whisk in the water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired pourability.
  7. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. You can add a pinch more salt, a splash of vinegar for tang, or a touch more honey if you prefer it sweeter. Remember that flavors will deepen as it cools, so keep that in mind.
  8. Remove the saucepan from heat. If you want a smoother sauce, you can pass it through a fine-mesh strainer to remove any tiny spice particles, though this is optional as the sauce should be quite smooth already.
  9. Let the sauce cool completely in the pan for about 10 minutes. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
  10. Transfer the cooled sauce to a glass jar or airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or use immediately as a glaze, dipping sauce, or marinade.

Notes

Store the sauce in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. To freeze, place in a freezer-safe container, leaving 1/2 inch of headroom, and store for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before use. To reheat, place the desired amount in a small saucepan and warm over low heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until heated through. Alternatively, microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring between each, until warm. For best flavor, bring to room temperature before serving.
