Schnitz Chips Seasoning

Schnitz Chips Seasoning - recipe card

A smoky, savory seasoning blend inspired by classic German schnitzel and chip-shop fries. This mix of smoked paprika, garlic, and onion powders delivers robust flavor with a gentle kick of cayenne. Perfect for sprinkling over freshly fried potatoes, roasted vegetables, or breaded meats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients and a small mixing bowl; a fine-mesh sieve or whisk will help ensure even distribution. Accurate measurement is critical to balance the smoky, savory, and spicy elements.
  2. Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, fine sea salt, black pepper, cayenne, and dried oregano (if using) directly into the bowl. Smoked paprika provides the signature depth, while cayenne adds a subtle heat that lingers without overwhelming.
  3. Whisk the mixture thoroughly for at least 30 seconds to break up any clumps and distribute the spices evenly. Pay special attention to the salt, which tends to settle; a uniform blend ensures consistent flavor on every batch of chips.
  4. Transfer the seasoning to an airtight glass jar or shaker bottle. A dark container protects the paprika from light degradation, preserving its vibrant color and smoky aroma.
  5. Label the jar with the name and date. Proper labeling prevents confusion with other spices and reminds you to use the blend within its optimal freshness window.
  6. For best results, apply the seasoning immediately to hot, freshly cooked chips (fries) or roasted potatoes — the heat helps the spices adhere and bloom. Use about 1 tablespoon per pound of potatoes, adjusting to taste.
  7. Store the jar in a cool, dark place such as a pantry or spice cabinet, away from the stove or oven. Avoid humidity to prevent caking; if clumps form, sift before use.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months. For optimal flavor, use within 3 months. Sprinkle generously over hot, freshly cooked chips (fries) immediately after frying or baking. Also excellent on roasted chicken, breaded pork chops, or as a seasoning for roasted vegetables. To re-season leftover chips, reheat in a 400°F (204°C) oven for 5 minutes, then toss with additional blend.
