Easy Spicy Pizza Sauce

Easy Spicy Pizza Sauce

This easy spicy pizza sauce comes together in just 30 minutes with a perfect balance of rich tomato flavor and a kick of heat from red pepper flakes. Ideal for homemade pizzas, it’s thick enough to spread without making the crust soggy. Use it immediately or store for later.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. When the oil shimmers, add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant, stirring constantly to avoid burning the garlic.
  2. Add the tomato paste and stir into the oil. Cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently. This step deepens the tomato flavor and removes the raw paste taste.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes along with the dried oregano, sugar, salt, and black pepper if using. Stir everything together until well combined.
  4. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium-high heat. You should see small bubbles breaking the surface but not a rolling boil.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This concentrate the flavors and thickens the sauce to a spreadable consistency.
  6. Taste the sauce and adjust salt, sugar, or red pepper flakes to your preference. If the sauce is too acidic, add an extra pinch of sugar to balance.
  7. If you prefer a smoother sauce, let it cool slightly and pulse in a blender or food processor until desired consistency. For a chunky sauce, leave as is.
  8. Remove from heat. Use immediately on pizza, or let cool to room temperature before storing.

Notes

Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before using. Reheat in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, or in the microwave in 30-second bursts until hot.
