Starbucks Caramel Macchiato

Starbucks Caramel Macchiato

A layered espresso beverage featuring velvety steamed milk, a shot of rich espresso, and a sweet vanilla syrup base, finished with a drizzle of buttery caramel sauce. This copycat recipe recreates the iconic coffeehouse drink with balanced sweetness and a smooth, creamy texture for a café-quality experience at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Vanilla Syrup:
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200g)
  • 1 cup water (240ml)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • For the Drinks:
  • 4 cups whole milk (960ml)
  • 4 shots freshly brewed espresso (about 1/2 cup / 120ml total, or 1 cup strongly brewed coffee as a substitute)
  • 4 tablespoons caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade, plus extra for drizzle)
  • Optional: ice cubes for iced version

Instructions

  1. Make the vanilla syrup: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Stir frequently until the sugar completely dissolves, about 2–3 minutes. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let cool to room temperature; the syrup will thicken slightly. Transfer to a jar and refrigerate until ready to use. This syrup can be stored for up to 2 weeks.
  2. Prepare the espresso: Using an espresso machine or stovetop moka pot, pull 4 shots of espresso (about 30ml per shot) into a small heatproof pitcher or cup. If you don’t have an espresso maker, brew 1 cup of very strong coffee using 4 tablespoons of finely ground coffee and replace the espresso. Keep warm.
  3. Steam the milk: Pour the whole milk into a stainless steel pitcher. Use a steam wand on an espresso machine to steam the milk, immersing the wand just below the surface and tilting the pitcher slightly to create a whirlpool. Heat until the milk reaches 150–155°F (65–68°C) and a smooth microfoam forms with tiny bubbles. Do not let it boil, as that will scorch the milk and destroy the texture. If you don’t have a steam wand, heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, whisking vigorously to create froth, until steaming but not boiling (about 150°F / 65°C).
  4. Assemble the first drink: Place 2 tablespoons (30ml) of vanilla syrup into a 12–16 ounce mug. Pour about 3/4 cup (180ml) of the steamed milk over the syrup, holding back the foam with a spoon so the milk fills the cup almost to the top. Then spoon about 1 tablespoon of the remaining foam on top.
  5. Add the espresso: Slowly pour one shot (about 30ml) of hot espresso directly through the center of the foam. The espresso will sink below the foam, then rise and create a dark layer on top. Do not stir — the layered effect is key to the macchiato.
  6. Drizzle with caramel: Drizzle 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce in a crosshatch pattern over the foam. For an authentic Starbucks look, drizzle in a grid: start at one edge and make parallel lines, then rotate the cup 90 degrees and repeat. Serve immediately.
  7. Repeat for remaining 3 servings, ensuring each mug has fresh steamed milk and hot espresso. If making iced caramel macchiatos, fill a tall glass with ice, add vanilla syrup, then cold milk, top with espresso, and drizzle with caramel.
  8. For best results, use freshly roasted espresso beans and grind them just before brewing. The vanilla syrup can be made in larger batches and kept in the refrigerator for consistent sweetness across multiple occasions.

Notes

Storage: The vanilla syrup keeps in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Prepared drinks should be consumed immediately — do not store assembled macchiatos as the layers will break down. For iced version, use cold milk instead of steamed milk and fill the glass with ice before adding syrup, milk, espresso, and caramel. To reheat leftover vanilla syrup, microwave for 10–15 seconds until fluid; do not reheat the full drink. If you prefer a less sweet beverage, reduce the vanilla syrup to 1 tablespoon per serving.
